Epic Mountain Challenge

October 4-7, 2013

Welcome

The EPIC Mountain Challenge is like nothing you’ve ever done before: EPIC = Mountain[Run+Ride]2

Four stage Ride/Run/Dirt/Road format

Over two EPIC days you’ll complete four stages, combining cross country and time trial mountain biking as well as trail and road running. The key to success with this race is to be consistently strong in all four disciplines and to be able to recover quickly and back up each session with the next.

A pot of gold PayDay ($60,000 to be exact)

Elite and Pro athletes from around the country and the globe will be enticed by the prospect of a generous prize purse, and will battle it out in the solos and teams categories for a big payday. What’s more – the money is not open just to Pros, anyone can have a crack at it – have you got what it takes?!

Prize Purse

1st – $5,000

2nd – $4,000

3rd – $3,000

4th – $2,000

5th – $1,000

* Teams split winnings

A gritty Challenge for Solos & 2-person Teams

Enter as a Solo (Men/Women) if you’re tough as nails and you know you can go the distance on all four legs, or pick your team-mate wisely if you’re going to go with this option. You want someone as hard-hitting and committed as you. You can divide the four stages into any combination between you to find a winning formula and share in the spoils (prize purse goes down to the 5th team). There’s an open category (Men and Mixed) and All-women as well. If you want to be part of the action you can also enter up to three events as an individual. Medals and SWAG will be on offer for those that do well in each event.

A world-class course in EPIC Colorado terrain

Stanley Levine was a man with vision and a great sense of humor! He’d be laughing (you probably won’t be) as you climb the south end of the Levine Ranch on the trail that Stanley cut on horseback. The terrain for all four courses are as beautiful as they are challenging. Technical, gnarly sections feed into flowy single track, with plenty of elevation change and also opportunities to open up the throttle. Dynamic and Scenic.

A lung-busting test of endurance at altitude

At 7,200ft Pagosa Springs is perched at the base of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The racing quickly takes an elevated view of the town as it climbs up Rez Hill behind the downtown area.

A chance to meet PROs and maybe even learn something

Lured by the big bucks there’ll be plenty of interaction with the Elite athletes. With panel discussions, question and answer time, and introductions – you may even learn some tips and tricks to improve your own performances. Rub shoulders and watch the best in action.

Join us on the grounds of The Springs Resort and Spa – Presenting Sponsor

We’ve teamed up with the most unique accommodation resort in town – The Springs Resort and Spa, to bring you quality accommodation and lodging packages that you, your friends and your family will love. We’re also going to set up the Start/Finish and Expo right on their doorstep so it’ll be easy, convenient and comfortable.

A spectator friendly course, and family friendly event

This race has been cleverly designed so that your family and friends will be asking you to sign up again next year. Firstly the course has plenty of accessible spectator points, and Pagosa Springs puts on a breathtaking show of Fall colors for you to enjoy. The Hot Springs pools areas overlooks the 10km Crit on the Sunday (they can watch you run from the luxury of a hot spring!). Most importantly the Start/Finish area and Expo where most of the action is happening is in central downtown and on the Resort property.

Plenty of entertainment and accessible activities

We’re going to cater high quality meals at the Start/Finish Expo area where competitors and companions can gather to enjoy a meal together. We’re also going to provide entertainment: piles of SWAG to give away, a farewell dinner, a Beer Garden, a Free Concert by legendary reggae artist Pato Banton on the Sunday and plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.

Make friends and connections

With all this entertainment, activity and gathering, you’ll get plenty of chance to mix with the other competitors and definitely make a few new friends too. We hope that the Epic Mountain Challenge will become your annual pilgrimage where you meet up again and again to cement these friendship bonds.

Stage-1. EPIC Trail ˝ Marathon

Trail Runner

Stage-1. EPIC Trail ˝ Marathon

Beginning on the doorstep of the Springs Resort, the course quickly climbs to EPIC single-track and remote trail. Intense climbs, scenic vistas and a mix of wooded forest and cool meadows, that’s what trail running is all about!

Question is; Do you gas it from the get-go and build your lead or pace yourself through all four EPIC Events?

Stage-2. EPIC Cross Country 50k Mountain Bike

Mountain Bike

Stage-2. EPIC Cross Country 50k Mountain Bike

Super flowy single-track, big climbs and sweet descents combine to reward the all-round rider on this awesome cross country course! Friends, families and spectators will appreciate the incredible bird’s eye view of you racing from the infamous EPIC Outpost.

This stage is your chance to gain a commanding lead at the end of day one, and stamp your authority on the competition.

Stage-3. EPIC Criterium 10k Road Run

Stage-3. EPIC Criterium 10k Road Run

Feeling fresh? It’s time to “bring it”. Day two heats up from the gun with this intense 5 lap 10k. A tight course ripping along the river will give your family, friends and spectators an amazing view of every lap right from the soaking pools of the Springs Resort! Eyeball the competition as you toe the line – everyone knows who is in poll position at the start of day two’s racing.

It’s going to feel short and sweet but you better save the best for last!

Stage-4. Rez d’Huez 4k Mountain Bike Time Trial.

Stage-4. Rez d’Huez 4k Mountain Bike Time Trial.

This is the time to make your move or give it all up to hold your position.
Don’t let the 4k distance fool you. As you learned yesterday Rez hill has a sting in its tail and this one is going to hurt! Just like her French cousin Alp d’huez the switchbacks just keep coming all the way to the summit.

Just as you reach oxygen debt, the course zips and zings right back down to the bottom with an EPIC descent to the finish line.
